As a hurricane-force storm system passed across Washington State overnight, strong winds toppled trees and rattled windows, causing some trains to be canceled and more than 600,000 customers to lose power as of Wednesday morning.
Authorities claimed that at least one individual had been slain.
A significant atmospheric river—a belt of precipitation that originates in the Pacific Ocean—crossed the Northwest early on Wednesday.
The Northwest is predicted to experience extreme winds, perhaps fatal flooding, and massive ocean waves this week due to this moisture and a bomb cyclone off the coasts of Oregon and Washington, which is named for its sharp drop in atmospheric pressure.
The first effects were felt Tuesday evening in portions of Western Canada and Washington State.
The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of up to 77 mph in some areas of Washington State. At 74 mph, hurricane-force winds start.
Because severe winds were forecast to last until around 4 a.m. local time and create extensive power disruptions, the government advised motorists to avoid the roadways.
The local fire department reported that a large tree fell on a homeless camp in Lynnwood, Washington, killing a woman in her fifties.
The Seattle Fire Department reported that a person was saved after a tree fell on their car.
As of early Wednesday, around 650,000 energy customers in the state were without power, according to the website poweroutage.us. The Weather Service reported that radio broadcasts at its headquarters in Seattle were disrupted by the outages.
Overnight and throughout the weekend, the Bay Area and Northern California were predicted to experience significant rainfall due to the same weather system.
More precipitation than a month’s worth is expected to fall during the following three to four days, according to forecasters.
The Weather Service issued storm warnings off the coast, as well as winter storm and blizzard warnings in and near the Cascade Mountains. The alerts were set to be lifted early Wednesday.
