However, there are ways to save money without giving up family favorites. According to a poll done by personal finance website MoneyGeek to determine the cost of Thanksgiving dinner in various locations.
The average cost of ingredients for a Thanksgiving spread for six in the Boston metro area is $152.46. Americans routinely spend $157 on a supper for six.
A full fresh turkey in the Boston metropolitan region typically costs approximately $26, with turkeys bought the week of Thanksgiving costing roughly 20% higher, according to MoneyGeek.
Since 2023, when poultry farms were devastated by avian flu, Turkey’s stockpiles have stabilized. Turkey production has increased by 2%, per a study conducted by the US Department of Agriculture.
According to the most recent Consumer Price Index, this has led to lower grocery store pricing for the centerpiece Thanksgiving turkey, with retail prices down roughly 2% from the previous year.
According to October inflation figures, while potatoes and apples are down 1%, the price of butter, a vital ingredient in Christmas baking, has risen 8% since 2023.
The latest Consumer Price Index data from the Labor Department shows that food costs are up about 1.1 percent this year and 28 percent in 2019.
Meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and fruits and vegetables were the six major food group indices that exhibited increases.
The results of another Lending Tree study are less encouraging. Thanksgiving food, drinks, and decorations will cost an average of $431, up almost 20% from the previous year, according to a poll of more than 2,050 customers in the US.
Over one-third (36%) think that hosting Thanksgiving will be expensive and could put them in debt.
How to Reduce Expenses? According to a Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute analysis, purchasing store (private label) goods rather than national brands would allow you to save money on your Thanksgiving shopping.
Wells Fargo experts created a shopping list for the study, which included standard Thanksgiving meal ingredients including turkey, stuffing, salad, cranberries, dinner rolls, and pumpkin pie.
This year’s meal for ten cost around $90 and featured national brand ingredients, which was 0.5% less than the previous year.
