World Cheese Awards: The UK loses the World Cheese Awards to Portugal

World Cheese Awards: The UK loses the World Cheese Awards to Portugal... Quinto do Pomar is a buttery, silky sheep’s milk cheese from the middle Serra da Gardunha region of Portugal. It has been dubbed the greatest in the world.

The cheese defeated American and Spanish cheeses (La Cava Barus García-Baquero and Bayley Hazen Blue) as well as Swiss cheeses (Alpenhorn Mifroma and Tea Fondada) to win the World Cheese Awards in Viseu, northern Portugal.

With a record 4,786 entries from 47 nations worldwide, this year’s edition of the event, which is organized by the British-based Guild of Fine Food, is the most important to date.

According to John Farrand, director of the Guild of Fine Food, the delays “would not have been a thing” before the UK’s exit from the EU.

“I don’t understand the reasons,” Farrand told The Observer. He went on to say: “even on Friday we were still fighting to get some clarity and clear instruction on what wasn’t right, but we had no success.”

“Before Brexit, this would not exist. This is a fact.

Judge James Grant, a co-founder of the Real Cheese Project, responded by describing the situation as “devastating” and citing “Brexit red tape.”

Grant told the Observer that the UK’s cheese business is undergoing an incredible shift. “These cheesemakers are working very hard to reintroduce handcrafted artisan cheese into the market. It’s quite sad. World Cheese Awards: The UK loses the World Cheese Awards to Portugal
